Milk: From Cow to Carton (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Book)

Not for preschoolers
More information than I expected. Covers the cows 4 stomachs... all the steps in processing milk... briefly touches on cheese making. More like a book for age 6+ (not for preschoolers like I needed). If I just read the first part though on cows making milk, maybe it would work, but my son always wants to read the entire book.... and if its boring he gets really disappointed and is done reading for a long time so I guess I will not use this until he is much older.

Informative without being overwhelming for a five year old.
The Let's Read and Find Out Series is on of our favorites. I bought this book recommended by Memoria Press Science Enrichment Curriculum for home schooling my five year old. We are using it along with The Milk Makers by Gail Gibbons. We read these books and then visited a local dairy farm that has an ice cream parlor on the farm. That ice cream parlor is very busy and it is fun to buy your ice cream cone and eat it in the picnic area outside. The dairy cows come right up to the fence and visit the customers as we are enjoying our ice cream.

Great book about where milk comes from
my 4 year old daughter was asking me where milk comes from and I wanted to show her the whole process, including getting across the idea that cows make milk primarily to feed their calves (just like people do), I was surprised that most other resources didn't mention that fact. Great illustrations and complete but not overly detailed text. We had fun reading it.

Non-fiction for preschoolers
Before I made butter from heavy cream with my 3 year old preschoolers I wanted to teach them about where milk comes from. This book presents the material in a very straightforward manner. It also goes beyond the 3 year old level in talking about pasteurization, so I would say it is very useful for ages 3 - 7. It is nicely illustrated and clearly written.

Great book!
I ordered this book to use as a read-aloud for my kindergarten students. It was a little above their level so I used the information within the book to make a powerpoint presentation that they could easily understand. I will use it in the future with my older students.

Marvelous Teaching Tool
The book is a marvelous tool for teaching kids just how milk is processed from cow to frig. My granddaughters had a thing or two to teach their parents! I would recommend this book. Even my 3 year old granddaughter talked about it days later, remembering many of the new words she had learned.

This is a very good expository text
This is a very good expository text. I used this book along with our basal reader Supermarket (can't remember the author) which is another expository text. Very informative!! You will be surprised what your students know and don't know about milk!! Great read!!

Factual but with a story like style
So informative on the whole process of milk from cow to carton in a easy to understand way. Factual but with a story like style. Also mentions milk comes from goats and sheep too as well as products that are made from milk. Tells you how to make your own simple butter at home.
